POKOTABI / ace cafe
Ace cafe
Ace cafe serves dishes such as its namesake-style Bolognese, with generous chunks of meat, and crisp pies topped with seasonal fruit. From the 10th floor, diners can look out over the Kamo River, and the drinks menu includes non-alcoholic bubble cocktails.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
One way to build a meal at Ace cafe is to make pasta the centrepiece, with a starter and something sweet alongside. One visitor ordered the Ace-style Bolognese and described a dish with substantial chunks of meat, enjoyed with a soft-boiled egg mixed through. The egg came with that visitor’s order; its richness complemented the minced-meat sauce. Other pasta options include shrimp in tomato cream, listed as the restaurant’s No. 1 favourite, and peperoncino with sea bream and cabbage. Choose between a richer sauce and a seafood combination to suit your mood.
For a starter to share, there is ajillo with shrimp and hon-shimeji mushrooms. One diner enjoyed the shrimp’s springy texture in the piping-hot dish, then dipped a separately ordered baguette into the remaining oil. Baguette is suggested as an accompaniment to pasta and ajillo, making it an easy addition to a table where everyone wants something to nibble on. Meat dishes include Daisen chicken thigh with romesco sauce and beef skirt steak. One visitor found the chicken tender and preferred it simply with the accompanying salt. Another praised the skirt steak’s tenderness and satisfying chew, making it a choice for an evening when meat is the main event.
For dessert, try a pie topped with seasonal fruit. The menu highlights the crisp pastry, baked in-house, and one visitor recalled ordering a kiwi pie large enough to share with a friend. The fruit changes with the seasons, so choosing from what is on offer that day is part of the appeal. Baked cheesecake and black tea chiffon cake are also available for a lighter finish.
Non-alcoholic bubble cocktails are among the drinks to pair with a meal. Options include mango with passion fruit, and cranberry with grapefruit. One visitor wrote that the bubbles floating in the glass burst to release a sweet fragrance. Whether you are sharing dishes or lingering over a drink and the view, the outlook towards Higashiyama and the Kamo River from the 10th floor is a distinctive feature of the restaurant.
